At Mont Royale International College, the Diploma in Hotel Management takes 2 years 7 months, across 8 semesters and 98 credit hours, under Ministry of Higher Education (KPT) approval reference N/1013/4/0143 and Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) code MQA/PA 17997.

In Malaysian higher education, a credit measures the whole learning load, not classroom time alone. The MQF Second Edition (2024) states that “the Malaysian credit value is one credit equivalent to 40 Notional Learning Hours”, counting lectures, tutorials, practical work, self-study, work-based learning and preparing for and sitting examinations. On that measure, a 98-credit diploma represents 3,920 notional learning hours of study in total (our calculation: 98 × 40).

What does MQA require of a diploma in hotel management?

A diploma in hotel management in Malaysia has to meet two sets of minimums from the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA): the national framework that applies to every diploma, and MQA’s programme standard for hospitality and tourism. The MQF Second Edition (2024) sets the first:

“The Diploma qualification at Level 4 applies to both academic and TVET. The minimum credit requirement is 90 credits, and the minimum duration is two years of full-time study or as determined by the discipline or professional requirements.”

For hotel programmes, MQA’s Programme Standards: Hospitality and Tourism (2nd Edition, 2019) cover hospitality, hotel and accommodation studies, and set out how a diploma’s 90 graduating credits are made up:

MQA hospitality standard: how a 90-credit diploma is made up
ComponentShare of creditsCredits
Compulsory courses (general and institution courses)10–17%9–15
Common core20–23%18–21
Discipline core57–67%51–60
Industrial training (minimum of 4 months)9–13%8–12
Electives0–7%0–6

In plain terms, at least 51 of a hospitality diploma’s 90 credits are discipline subjects, and 8 to 12 are industrial training, which MQA says “must be in a relevant industry” and allocates, at a minimum, on the formula of 1 credit = 2 weeks of training. Industrial training therefore counts inside the diploma’s credits, not as an extra period after it.

Is 2 years 7 months longer than the minimum?

Yes. At 2 years 7 months and 98 credit hours, Mont Royale’s Diploma in Hotel Management is above both MQF minimums for a diploma, two years and 90 credits. MQA’s hospitality standard describes its statements as the minimum requirement and encourages higher education providers (HEPs) to go further:

“As the statements within the PS should be viewed as the minimum requirement, HEPs are encouraged to go beyond the basic minimum.”

The standard also gives higher education providers the flexibility to design their own programmes, provided they cover the body of knowledge it sets out. This flexibility means hotel management diplomas in Malaysia can differ in length and credit total while meeting the same MQA standard.

Is the workplace training part of the 2 years 7 months?

Mont Royale presents work-based learning as experience gained before graduation: in the college’s words, students “develop an understanding of professional working environments while completing your education.” The college’s published details give 2 years 7 months and 8 semesters as the approved duration of the Diploma in Hotel Management; they do not set out which semester the workplace training falls in or how long it lasts.

WBL participation and benefits are subject to eligibility, available placements, confirmed agreements and programme requirements. Employment is not automatically guaranteed.

Does Mont Royale’s hotel management diploma come with an allowance?

Mont Royale’s Diploma in Hotel Management is the college’s featured Work-Based Learning programme, and eligible students in designated WBL arrangements “may receive monthly training allowances from RM1,500 and other benefits, subject to their programme and industry placement agreements.” WBL benefits apply only to eligible students under designated arrangements. Employment is subject to employer assessment and vacancies.

The college writes that “eligible students in designated Work-Based Learning arrangements may participate in structured training with participating hospitality employers.” Depending on the applicable arrangement, benefits may include:

  • Industry-based practical training
  • Monthly allowance from RM1,500 under the designated scheme
  • Accommodation during the workplace training period
  • Duty meals
  • Workplace supervision
  • Opportunities for continued employment consideration after graduation

More widely, the college states: “WBL participation and benefits are subject to eligibility, available placements, confirmed agreements and programme requirements. Employment is not automatically guaranteed.” To ask how the arrangement would apply to you, message the admissions team about Hotel Management work-based learning on WhatsApp. For the background, read what work-based learning means in a Malaysian diploma, whether students are paid during work-based learning in Malaysia and the college’s Work-Based Learning page.

Admission, programme availability, credit transfer, study location and qualification awarding are determined by the relevant university and approved arrangements.

What do entry requirements and fees depend on?

Malaysian applicants follow five steps:

  1. Explore Your Programmes
  2. Check Entry Requirements
  3. Submit an Enquiry
  4. Receive Admissions Information
  5. Complete the Application

International applicants follow their own five steps, including Student Pass processing. Both routes are on the Admissions page, or you can ask the admissions team about the Diploma in Hotel Management on WhatsApp.

How can you check the diploma’s accreditation?

You can check the Diploma in Hotel Management’s accreditation status yourself on MQA’s own website. Its code, MQA/PA 17997, is a provisional accreditation (MQA/PA) code, so the programme is looked up on MQA’s Provisional Accreditation portal rather than the Malaysian Qualifications Register (MQR). Three other Mont Royale diplomas carry full accreditation (MQA/FA) codes.

The Malaysian Qualifications Register states that only accredited programmes offered by higher education providers in Malaysia are listed in it, and that a programme it has no record of may have “obtained Provisional Accreditation” without yet reaching full accreditation; for those, it points to the Provisional Accreditation portal. The guide MQA full vs provisional accreditation explains the two stages, and the college’s Recognition and Quality page sets out its registration, DK373 (B), and its MyQUEST 6-Star recognition.
