Mont Royale International College’s Diploma in Cabin Crew Management takes 2 years 6 months, over 8 semesters and 90 credit hours, and its nine areas of study may include passenger handling, customer service and emergency response principles. Airline recruitment, safety certifications and professional employment requirements are determined by the relevant employers and authorities.

Key takeaways

  • Mont Royale International College’s Diploma in Cabin Crew Management (KPT approval reference N/1041/4/0017, MQA code MQA/PA 18150) takes 2 years 6 months, across 8 semesters and 90 credit hours.
  • Mont Royale International College lists nine areas of study the cabin crew diploma may include, from cabin crew responsibilities and passenger handling to emergency response principles and airline and airport operations.
  • Under the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia’s Civil Aviation Directive 6009 (CAD 6009), a person may act as a cabin crew member only with a valid attestation, which the approved operator issues after the applicant passes the examination that follows an approved initial training course.
  • A cabin crew attestation under CAD 6009 and a cabin crew diploma are separate things: the diploma is an academic qualification, and the attestation’s initial training is provided by CAAM-approved training organisations or commercial air transport operators.
  • At Mont Royale International College, entry requirements differ according to qualification level and programme, and programme fees depend on the course, intake and student category.

What do you study in a cabin crew diploma?

On Mont Royale International College’s Diploma in Cabin Crew Management, relevant learning areas may include nine areas: cabin crew responsibilities, aviation service standards, passenger handling, aviation safety awareness, emergency response principles, customer service, professional grooming and presentation, aviation communication, and airline and airport operations. The diploma “introduces students to knowledge relevant to cabin services, airline passenger care and aviation-related professional environments.”

Mont Royale’s list of areas of study says “may include”: it names relevant learning areas, not a module timetable, so the semester-by-semester detail of the Diploma in Cabin Crew Management comes from the admissions team. The grouping into themes is this guide’s; the areas themselves are the college’s.

The subjects sit alongside personal qualities. “The aviation industry depends on individuals who demonstrate professionalism, communication skills, teamwork and a strong awareness of passenger safety.” The programme’s invitation to students is to “develop your confidence, communication and understanding of service standards in preparation for opportunities within aviation-related industries.” The full programme summary is on the Diploma in Cabin Crew Management page.

Do you need a diploma to become cabin crew in Malaysia?

Not under CAAM’s rules. Under the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia’s Civil Aviation Directive 6009 (CAD 6009), the minimum qualification for a cabin crew attestation applicant is SPM or equivalent, alongside conditions such as being at least 18 years old. A cabin crew diploma is a separate academic qualification.

CAD 6009 – Cabin Crew (Issue 01, Revision 02) came into effect on 15 November 2022. It states that a person shall not act as a cabin crew member without a valid attestation, and that the attestation is issued by the approved operator only to an applicant who has passed the examination following the initial training course. That training is “provided by training organisations or commercial air transport operators approved to do so by the competent authority”. Operators may use third-party training organisations for certain elements of the training, but the operator remains responsible for delivering the attestation.

CAD 6009 sets these minimum qualifications for an attestation applicant:

  • at least 18 years old;
  • a pass in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) or equivalent qualifications;
  • the ability to read, speak, write and understand English;
  • the ability to retrieve safety and emergency equipment and open and close overhead bins from a standing position, without shoes;
  • the ability and strength to operate the aircraft’s equipment and systems in normal, abnormal and emergency situations;
  • a clear criminal record and a passed security background check;
  • the medical requirements of CAD 1004, and any other requirements the operator itself sets.

The CAD 6009 initial training programme must address nine elements: aviation terminology, including the physiology of flight; duties and responsibilities; normal, abnormal and emergency procedures; aircraft type rating; dangerous goods regulations; aviation security; cabin health and first aid; human factors, including crew resource management; and safety management system training. These nine elements belong to the approved initial training course for an attestation. They are not a list of the diploma’s subjects.

The “PA” in MQA/PA 18150 marks a provisional accreditation code; three of Mont Royale’s eight diplomas carry full accreditation (MQA/FA) codes, and the guide to full versus provisional MQA accreditation explains the difference. MQA’s Malaysian Qualifications Register states that only accredited programmes offered by higher education providers in Malaysia are listed in it, and points to MQA’s Provisional Accreditation portal for a programme it does not show. A provisional code such as MQA/PA 18150 is therefore checked on the Provisional Accreditation portal. The college’s Recognition and Quality page explains all its codes.

What careers can graduates explore?

Graduates of Mont Royale International College’s Diploma in Cabin Crew Management may explore opportunities such as cabin crew applicant, airline customer service agent, airport passenger services officer, ground services representative, aviation service executive and aviation operations support. The six roles span the aircraft cabin, the airport terminal and aviation operations behind them.

“Cabin Crew Applicant” means applying to an operator: joining that operator’s cabin crew depends on its recruitment, the approved initial training and the attestation under CAD 6009.

Airline recruitment, safety certifications and professional employment requirements are determined by the relevant employers and authorities.

Further study is another route: “Diploma graduates can explore relevant further study opportunities, subject to receiving institution requirements and applicable credit recognition.” The guide to doing a degree after a diploma in Malaysia explains how that works, and the University Pathways page covers Mont Royale’s university connections. Mont Royale’s academic engagements and collaboration initiatives include UniSZA, UTM and UMS. Admission, programme availability, credit transfer, study location and qualification awarding are determined by the relevant university and approved arrangements. Mont Royale does not imply that all degree or postgraduate programmes offered by these universities are available through the College.

Where does GroundX Aviation fit in?

GroundX Aviation is one of the wider educational connections named on the Diploma in Cabin Crew Management page: “Mont Royale’s wider educational connections include GroundX Aviation, a specialised initiative focused on aviation training development and industry engagement.” GroundX, also called GroundX by Mont Royale, is an aviation-focused initiative connected with the wider Mont Royale educational ecosystem.

This broader aviation connection “supports Mont Royale’s interest in developing relevant educational opportunities and professional industry awareness.” How GroundX relates to a particular student’s studies is a question for the admissions team; the GroundX Aviation page sets out its areas of focus.

Regulated aviation programmes and professional certifications are subject to applicable authority approvals. GroundX’s Part-147 initiative remains subject to CAAM approval unless official approval has been obtained.

Two further aviation diplomas, Aircraft Maintenance Engineering and Aviation Ground Operations & Ramp Management, are proposed or under development and listed among the upcoming programmes. Final programme titles, curriculum, duration, availability and commencement remain subject to applicable academic and regulatory approvals. Aircraft maintenance licensing is subject to the separate requirements of the relevant aviation authority.

What should you check before choosing a cabin crew course?

Before choosing a cabin crew diploma or course in Malaysia, check its approval codes, what its areas of study cover and how they are taught, and how it relates to the separate initial training and attestation that cabin crew need under CAD 6009. Six questions cover most of it:

  • What are the programme’s KPT approval reference and MQA code, and does the code appear on MQA’s register or its Provisional Accreditation portal?
  • Which areas of study does the programme include, and how are they taught and assessed across the semesters?
  • What practical learning does the programme include, and does any work-based learning arrangement apply to it?
  • Do I meet the CAD 6009 minimums for an attestation applicant, including age, SPM or equivalent qualifications, English, the physical abilities, the background check and the medical requirements?
  • What are the entry requirements, fees and funding options for my student category?
  • What further study could follow the diploma?

Mont Royale’s eight diplomas, with their codes and durations, are listed on the Programmes page. More guides for school leavers, parents and international applicants are on Mont Royale Insights.
